BENLIZ garri products |
It is a clear fact that cannot be
denied that is not very cheap to start a garri processing factory for the
average individual who is trying to save, honourably, to start this business.
As at last year, it was so easy to
start this business, but since everything has doubled, we can understand why it
became a bit expensive.
This doesn’t mean that having a
garri processing factory is not affordable and wouldn’t pay off its investment
equity over time, but I am simply implying that many who had this idea are
burring it because of the high cost of setting up.
While those who had managed to set
up are reaping the profits, many who had the idea are wishing they could also
be in this business.
Garri, because of its local affinity
to the common man, is considered a low product, not capable of raking in so
much profit. At times, I used to say to Mr. Garri itself that, ‘maybe if you
had come in black colour and people willing to eat you had to go through a
rigorous refining process of making you white and edible, many would have taken
you seriously.’
Nevertheless, one’s condescending
or deriding attitude towards this product doesn’t stop the fact that garri
remains one of the few lucrative food product to look into.
Maybe that was why the garri
factory you knew since you were a kid still remained intact and functioning.
Maybe that was why these great
grandmothers has refused to leave this business.
Once I was on a recce mission on
behalf of a client at Ilaro in Ogun State and the old lady I met started to
give me her cost of production in such discouraging way. But I knew the trick-
it was to serve as a deterrent to newbies. This is their trick every time. But
what they failed to realise is that it is impossible to process at such given
prices and expect a profit.
After much dragging, I threw them
the bait that the reason I was there was to set up a garri factory on behalf of
an NGO- the purpose of which is to serve and ensure that the community is well
paid. But since they were already well paid, we would like to set up elsewhere.
You could not imagine the commotion and retraction of previous statements…lol
That being said, we shall proceed
on how to start a garri business without having to set up a garri processing
factory. But note that setting up is the best option. So, while at it, save up
for this, later.
I will like to use a potential
client as a reference- BENLIZ.
BENLIZ started as a repackaging
business until he was able to save up and start a factory of his own. Apart from
his garri business, he has other products.
BENLIZ is now a branded product,
but everyone can start with a step. So, what do we need?
- 1. Costumers
- 2. Knowledge on where to get this garri on how garri is produced especially the ijebu garri and the yellow one. (This could be gotten from my manual). Those who already has it would know this already.
- 3. Money
- 4. Packaging bags
- 5. Nylon bags
- 6. Bag stitcher
- 7. Nylon sealer
- 8. Delivery strategy

1.
WHO
ARE YOUR TARGETTED CUSTOMERS?
Are you willing to
sell to supermarkets?
Are you willing to
resell at the open market?
Would you rather
sell in your shops?
How about you
consider exportation? (Though, this is a special case that I will have to treat
separately)
Maybe you should
think about selling in the office too?
Or in other
offices around you!
2.
YOU
NEED TO KNOW WHERE TO BUY YOUR GARRI AND HOW THEY ARE PRODUCED
DO NOT DECEIVE
YOURSELF, you seriously need to know how to produce this product and how to
differentiate one from the other- apart from the colour, you need to buy the
real one and what they say it is.
Where can I get this? I am sure you are
not thinking of going to the reseller in the city to buy? I had another client
who made this mistake for month and wasn’t making more than two thousand on a
bag after repackaging. She sells in her office and was making this low profit
until she thought otherwise.
You may check you
neighbouring States and ask for the garri market. There is always one in every
not-so-developed states who strive in Agriculture. You will be amazed on how
low the price is, compared to your city!
More stressful
option is if you visit the garri factory and buy directly. Do not be fooled
that you will buy from the factory at a lower price as they will sell the same
price it is sold at their market.

MONEY
Abi you need
explanation on this one too? LOL
4.
BRANDED
OR ORDINARY PACKING BAGS
Entrepreneurs with
dreams like BENLIZ need a branded bag to pack their product. Note that this doesn’t
mean you cannot bag is a thick transparent polythene bags where by your
customers could see what they’re buying clearly. This is necessary where you
bag in less kilograms as 5kg or 10kg bags.
Bags of various
sizes could be obtained at very cheap and from the local manufacturers (For
example, BAGCO in Nigeria) You may ask them to brand it for you or you give to
an artist (not WIZKID abi DON JAZZY o…lol) to print on it.
Those who will
export or display in pen shops must first put the product in a very thin
polythene bag and seal with the NYLON
SEALER before placing in the branded porous bags as BENLIZ’s. This will
ensure that your product stays fresh and has a very long shelf-life. The BAG STITCHER stitches the bag.

DELIEVERY
STRATEGY
How would you want
to do your own business? Would you rather deliver to your clients or ask them
to come for it?
It is a known
fact that by the time you understand and succeed in this, like BENLIZ, you
would want your own factory so as to have more profit. Thank you
